My absolute favourite Saramago work. A majestic allegory that portrays humanity in its true nature, written in Saramago's unique form.

For those who actually know Portuguese, this is a must-read book from a must-read author. It is uniquely written. Saramago intertwines beautifully and perfectly the gritty, naked, most brusque realistic descriptions of our most visceral emotions and rotten behaviours, with the most poetic depictions of our capability for love and kindness.

Storywise, the narrated events serve the mere purpose of creating the pretenses that allow for the books' true narrative to take place: an essay on our most intimate selves, as both individuals and and as species.
